Tanfield Railway Gateshead – The Worlds Oldest Train!

If you’re looking to experience a genuine ride on a steam railway before it disappear from the plant for good then Tanfield Railway is the place yo want to go. The Tanfield Railway is ‘officially’ still in Gateshead but about 5kms drive into the country side. So not really that far. About a 10 to 15 minute drive traffic depending.

What is the Tanfield Railway

The railway itself if only 3 miles long and the train itself is just under 5th high. So it’s a unique experience to ride on the train. And the Tanfield Railway has a claim to fame. They claim to be the ‘oldest’ railway on the planet. If you are a fan of trains, history in general or just looking for something to do with the kids on the weekend that is fun and educational then the Tanfield Railway is a perfect fit!

When you ride on the train you will be passing stunning scenery throughout the Durham country side. You can ride the train on Sundays between 10am and 4pm. There is also a £30 unlimited ticket that allows you to ride as many times as you like for 12 months! The special event trains cost more. You can book on the website or you can buy tickets at the Tanfield Railway in person.
