Discovery Museum – Newcastle’s Maritime History

Discovery Museum is located in the Co-operative Wholesale Society building, Blandford House.

The museums building is quite old as it dates back to 1899. It did not take long until the building became quite iconic in the city center of Newcastle. in 1978 Blandford house opened its doors as a museum and in 1993 is when the name Discovery Museum was adopted.

Newcastle’s Maritime History

So what is Discovery Museum? What will you find? Maritime history! Among other things.

When you first walk in the doors of the museum you will be confronted by a 34 meter high steam powered ship. The Charles Parsons’.  By today’s standards this ship is not very fast at all but when it was first roaring through the waters there was a time where it was the world’s fastest ship and it has an iconic place in the history of Newcastle.

One of the permanent attractions that is available to visit year round is called Destination Tyneside. The exhibit is dedicated to the history of Tyne. And more importantly all the people that were involved in coal mining, heavy engineering and shipbuilding. If you are from Newcastle then this could be your ancestors!

There was a point in 1911 that about 30% off all Newcastle residents were migrants or the kids of migrants.

Destination Tyneside looks at the stories of the migrants and how they made their home in Tyne. If you have ancestors that were part of this amazing story that made Newcastle and Tyne what it is today you can actually have your name added to a commemorative wall. All you need to do is visit this official page of Discovery Museum and follow the instructions: https://discoverymuseum.org.uk/whats-on/destination-tyneside.

If you would like to visit the museum you can do so between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily.

How to Remove Oil Stains from your Carpet

Accidents can happen. And your carpet is no exception. One of the worst types of stains that you can deal with is is having to deal with cleaning an oil stain.

It does not matter how the stain happened. If something greasy fell off a plate and landed on the carpet. Or you were carrying a kitchen tray full of oil and you lost your grip so now the carpet is covered in oil. Today we are going to look at how to get rid of the dreaded cooking oil or grease that has stained your carpet.

The first thing to remember is not to stress out. Are oil stains bad for your carpet? Yes they are. But they can be cleaned quite easily if you just follow this simple guide below to learn how to deal with stain removal.

Step  #1 – Dab the Oil Stain

The very first thing you want to do is dab the oil stain on your carpet. So you don’t ruin any clean towels it’s best to use very absorbent disposable hand towels. And when we say very absorbent we do mean very absorbent. Go to the shop and buy extra absorbance hand towels.

Keep dabbing at the oil stain until you get as much oil out of the carpet as possible. This will actually remove most of the oil from the stain.

Step #2 – Coat the Oil Stain on Your Carpet with Baking Soda

The next step is very easy. Take baking soda and sprinkle it on top of the oil stain. Next you’re going to let the oil stain sit for 3 to 6 hours. Then just vacuum the powder up. The baking powder act as an absorbent and sucks the oil out of the carpet. So when you vacuum the powder you are actually vacuuming oil as well.

This step can potentially remove the oil stain entirely. If it has not remove the oil stain out of your carpet then it’s time to move on to the next step.

Step #3 – Time for the Soap!

It sounds like this stain is being a royal pain! Time to get the degreasing fight started! Cleaning is important. Don’t give up!

Take an ordinary degreaser that is store bought but make sure is the heavy duty. Create a mixture of one part hot water and one part soap.

Next you want to start to dab above the oil stain again. Make sure you dab all over the oil stain on your carpet and then let the degreaser fight the oil for about 2 minutes. Repeat this cycle until the oil stain has been removed. Then take normal water and a new cloth and dab again. This will soak up the excess soap in your carpet.

Step #4 – Call Us Instead

If you we’re not able to successfully remove the stain or you just simply don’t have time to deal with removing and oil stains from your carpet the other option is to just give Clean Victoria Gateshead a call and we will happily come out to your property to deal with the removal of an oil change.

How to Keep Your Carpets at Cleaner for Longer!

You don’t have to be wise of an old age to know that carpets make a huge difference in your home. Even a 10 year old can tell you that when they walk into a home with nice and clean carpets they feel good in comparison to a home that has old and worn carpets. Today we are going to explore how to keep your carpets cleaner, for longer.

There are several things you can do to maintain your carpets with some basic carpet cleaning tips you can do at home so let’s jump into it.

That Trusty Welcome Matt!

Those welcome mats and not just to have some funny message to make people laugh. If you have ever lived in a home that has not used a welcome mat and has floorboard you will understand how much dirt and dust actually get into your home. For the most part you can’t see a lot of this dirt if you have carpet.

A welcome mat will keep your carpets cleaner by reducing the amount of dirt and dust that comes into your property. A door mat can be picked up for as little as £5 to £10.  So it’s a worthwhile investment.

This is not about getting more business for us. This is about giving you the right advice. The reality is carpet are expensive to replace when just dealing with the material cost alone. So getting professional carpet cleaning done twice a year is a surefire way to protect your carpets and keep them as new as possible. If you’re committed to bi-annual carpet cleaning then why not speak to the carpet cleaning company you use, hint, hint, about a repeat customer discount.

Regular Vacuum Cleaning

How to Prepare your Carpets for Professional Cleaning

You might be thinking that when a carpet cleaner in Newcastle comes into your property there’s nothing that you need to do to prepare beforehand. But that’s not the case and it is a very common misconception. What we are going to today is what you need to do to prepare to have your carpets professionally cleaned.

A Quick Vacuum

Although a carpet cleaning company is coming in to your home to do professional carpet cleaning. They’re not there to do vacuum. That is really your job.

When your carpet cleaning company arrives they want to get straight into dealing with deep steam cleaning or carpet shampooing.

If the cleaners arrive at your property and they have to spend 1 hour with a regular vacuum then you are going to get charged. So if you do the right thing and make sure your carpets are clean in the first place you will be happy as you will pay the price you got over the phone.

Move Furniture Around

Your carpet cleaning company might ask you to move furniture before they get there. If some furniture is to large to take off the carpet such as large couches then it’s best to push them against the wall. For all the other smaller items such as the chairs at a dining table they should be turned upside down and placed on the dining table.

Everything else that is generally lying around your home such as kids toys, shoes, clothes, any electronics and anything else at all should be packed up and put in the cupboard or somewhere that is not on the carpet.

Another thing that you can do to make sure curtains are not coming in contact with the floor. The best thing to do is to simply use a hanger and hang the curtains up on the curtain rod. This way any machines that are brought in for cleaning wont damage your curtains.

Don’t Plan on Staying at Home

When you’re getting your carpets professionally cleaned don’t plan on staying in the property. It depends on what type of carpet cleaning you’re going to get. The most common is deep steam cleaning and that type of cleaning and take a few hours to dry.

If you stay at the property you will likely get in the way of the professional there to clean your carpet so it’s best to just plan on leaving the property once you have invited the cleaning company in to start work.

A Few Handy Stain Removal Tips

Everyone has spilled something on the carpet at one point or another. Have you ever noticed that just taking a sponge and scrubbing makes a stain much harder to get it out. That’s because when you start rubbing a stain you’re actually pushing something deeper into the carpet fibers. This is why you can rub a stain off a tee-shirt also. It has to go in the wash!

Here are a few handy tips to help you deal with the most common stains in the home.

Coffee Stains

There’s one real reason that coffee can stain so badly and that is simply that the sugar amplifies the staining effect. Not to get scientific or anything like that but the sugar pretty much adheres to anything it touches.

Think for a moment about anything that’s sticky and make from sugar that you get on your hands. It sticks quite well until you wash your hands properly right?

And then what happens when you wash your hands with hot water? It comes right off and much easier than cold water. So the trick to get rid of a coffee stain is to pour boiling water on to the stain and then allow the stain to lift itself out. Then dab the area dry.

Don’t rub!

Just dab the area dry. Just be careful. Don’t use to much water and get your carpet waterlogged. And you can always count on Clean Victoria Gateshead to come to and help you clean your stains if you don’t have time!

Ink Stains

Ink stains are another very common stain that can happen at home.

If it’s a pen leaking and getting on the carpet or if it is the pen that I accidentally fell on the floor and the carpet ended up with a stain. No matter what it is you might be dealing with a serious stain. And you might think you need a professional carpet cleaning company to come to the rescue. But that might not be the case.

What you can do is take one part lemon juice from a freshly squeezed lemon and one part regular detergent and pour it on the stain. Just let this sit for about 30 minutes and then dab out the solution. Once you feel like you have got all the solution continue the dabbing process but with hot water.

Hopefully they two tips were what you were looking for and they will come in handy the next time you have a deal with coffee stains or ink stains on your carpet. If you need to call a professional carpet cleaning Newcastle company and you haven’t been able to get your stains out of your carpet then you can always give us a call.
