The Hoppings is a famous funfair that happens in Newcastle’s Town Moor every year towards the end of June. At the time of writing this in 2018 the funfair for 2019 will be starting on Friday, 21st of June and ending on Saturday, 29th of June. The 2019 fair will be the 136th year running.

What is The Hoppings?

Imagine hundreds of rides, food and drink stalls, fancy show rides and mix in some fortune tellers. That’s The Hoppings. Just imaging any funfair you’ve been to but about 10x bigger!

How To Survive The Hoppings

If you are planning to attend the fair you need a strategy. So much can go wrong but with a bit of planning you’ll be the champion who made it with your group of friends.

Don’t Eat Before Rides

The fair is full of food. There are more sweet and savory treats than you could try in an entire lifetime! Play it smart and don’t eat much before getting on the rides. Spinning around and around on a ride might mean that nice treat won’t stay down!

Bring Lots of Money

Make sure you bring plenty of money and just forget about your budget. You’re here to have fun! The Hoppings is not really a place to stick to a budget. Have fun, save what you plan to save for the funfair and make sure you spend every last penny. You’ll be talking about the fun you had for the rest of your life and that is something money can’t buy. No one want’s to hear how you didn’t go of that ride or this ride as you were budgeting.

Plan Ahead

The Hoppings is a big funfair in Newcastle. Accommodation gets booked up quite fast. If you are coming in from out of town make sure you get your hotels or guest houses booked in months in advance or even earlier if possible. The Town Wall

The Town Wall is in a perfect spot if you can get home from Central Station. As it’s located a few minutes stroll from central in Pink Lane. The Town Wall is a spacious pub with a very lively atmosphere. The food and drink is top quality to say the least!

On the 10th of October 1928 thousands of citizens from Newcastle packed the streets as King George V officially cut the tape and officially opened Tyne Bridge. Was there really a tape cutting? No one really knows if there was an actual tape cutting but 2018 marks 90 years since the opening of Tyne Bridge.

At the time Tyne Bridge was the longest single-span bridge in operation globally.

Over nearly the last century the Tyne Bridge has become a well recognized symbol of Newcastle. The bridge is not just a monument raised for tourism though. It serves a real purpose when traveling across between Newcastle and Gateshead over the River Tyne. Unfortunately this also meant a lot of business was taken away from Gateshead.

Two Very Similar Bridges

You might notice that the bridge in Newcastle and the bridge in Sydney, Australia a very visually similar. And you would be right to question this. The bridges are in fact pretty much the same. The same firm, Mott, Hay and Anderson designed both bridges. But you might be pleased to know that Tyne Bridge opened about 4 years ago before the bridge in Sydney.

Tyne Bridge Was actually a prototype used before Sydney Harbour Bridge was built. To cut a long story short as you could argue several different viewpoint for a very long time. Tyne Bridge came first.

Tyne Bridge Newcastle Facts

• Unlike Sydney’s Bridge, Tyne Bridge cannot be climbed. One simply needs to Google ‘Climb Tyne Bridge’ and the first page of Google is covered in arrest notices.
• Construction on Tyne Bridge started in August 1925 and finished on 25th February 1928.
• Tyne Bridge is spans 162 meters and has a height of 59 meters.
• The Tyne Bridge was built with 7,112 tonnes of steel coming in at a total cost of £1.2MM. By today’s standards that seems like pocket change. If the conversion is done based off 2018 rates with inflation that’s about £9MM!
• One person died during the construction of the Tyne Bridge. His name was Nathaniel Collions. The reason for his death was that safety ropes were not mandatory.
• The design of Tyne Bridge was by a local from Newcastle called Robert Burns Dick.
• The towers were designed to be warehouses with five separate floors each but to this day they remain incomplete inside without levels.

Discovery Museum is located in the Co-operative Wholesale Society building, Blandford House.

The museums building is quite old as it dates back to 1899. It did not take long until the building became quite iconic in the city center of Newcastle. in 1978 Blandford house opened its doors as a museum and in 1993 is when the name Discovery Museum was adopted.

Newcastle’s Maritime History

So what is Discovery Museum? What will you find? Maritime history! Among other things.

When you first walk in the doors of the museum you will be confronted by a 34 meter high steam powered ship. The Charles Parsons’.  By today’s standards this ship is not very fast at all but when it was first roaring through the waters there was a time where it was the world’s fastest ship and it has an iconic place in the history of Newcastle.

One of the permanent attractions that is available to visit year round is called Destination Tyneside. The exhibit is dedicated to the history of Tyne. And more importantly all the people that were involved in coal mining, heavy engineering and shipbuilding. If you are from Newcastle then this could be your ancestors!

There was a point in 1911 that about 30% off all Newcastle residents were migrants or the kids of migrants.

Destination Tyneside looks at the stories of the migrants and how they made their home in Tyne. If you have ancestors that were part of this amazing story that made Newcastle and Tyne what it is today you can actually have your name added to a commemorative wall.
