The Hoppings – Newcastle’s Annual Funfair

The Hoppings is a famous funfair that happens in Newcastle’s Town Moor every year towards the end of June. At the time of writing this in 2018 the funfair for 2019 will be starting on Friday, 21st of June and ending on Saturday, 29th of June. The 2019 fair will be the 136th year running.

What is The Hoppings?

Imagine hundreds of rides, food and drink stalls, fancy show rides and mix in some fortune tellers. That’s The Hoppings. Just imaging any funfair you’ve been to but about 10x bigger!

How To Survive The Hoppings

If you are planning to attend the fair you need a strategy. So much can go wrong but with a bit of planning you’ll be the champion who made it with your group of friends.

Don’t Eat Before Rides

The fair is full of food. There are more sweet and savory treats than you could try in an entire lifetime! Play it smart and don’t eat much before getting on the rides. Spinning around and around on a ride might mean that nice treat won’t stay down!

Bring Lots of Money

Make sure you bring plenty of money and just forget about your budget. You’re here to have fun! The Hoppings is not really a place to stick to a budget. Have fun, save what you plan to save for the funfair and make sure you spend every last penny. You’ll be talking about the fun you had for the rest of your life and that is something money can’t buy. No one want’s to hear how you didn’t go of that ride or this ride as you were budgeting.

Plan Ahead

The Hoppings is a big funfair in Newcastle. Accommodation gets booked up quite fast. If you are coming in from out of town make sure you get your hotels or guest houses booked in months in advance or even earlier if possible. Also, don’t forget to check out Airbnb as it’s much nicer to stay in an apartment with all you friends than in then be spread out over a few different hotels in Newcastle.
